JUVENTUS TO MAKE AN OFFER FOR DAVID VILLA ?

Last Thursday there was a meeting at a Barcelona Hotel between "representatives" of Italian Club JUVENTUS & persons close to FC BARCELONA forward DAVID VILLA. According to Spanish paper "El Comercio", which has been picked up by "Sport", "Mundo Deportivo" & "Marca", the Italians wanted to know the Villa situation & his thoughts. From this the Barcelona Sports papers speculate that nothing will

There is a
soap box drama happening at ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO which is worth a post for all the Spanish Football Sports readers. After attempting to renew the contract of 27 year old forward FERNANDO

JUVENTUS EYES HIGUAIN &/OR BENZEMA FOR NEXT SEASON

News from Italy, concretely from "Tuttosports" & picked up locally via Spanish Sports daily "As", mentions that JUVENTUS has REAL MADRID forward GONZALO HIGUAIN as mximum signing objective for next season. But there is more, in case it all gets difficult , Juventus has a Plan- B , that is,  KARIM BENZEMA.

Gonzalo Higuain

Both have been for sometime on the Italian Clubs list of players to

The world's top 25 soccer clubs, Dec. 14, 2009

You might call the week that was Separation Week in European soccer. The Champions League group stage completed play and with it the chances of certain clubs finishing in the top 10 by season's end (you know who you are, Juventus). Other teams are resurgent, having rescued their seasons from the brink (Bayern Munich). Then there are clubs that limp into the elimination round. such as Olympique Lyon. Finally there was a string of upsets in the Premiership and Serie A that needed to be taken into account. How would it all shake out? Read on and you'll see.

1. Barcelona
Last ranking: 1
Record (wins-losses-ties, in all competition; two-leg match-ups count as one): 18-1-5
Results of note: (chronological order) Beat Shakhtar Donetsk (at the time ranked 14th) in overtime in the UEFA SuperCup, Aug. 29, drew at then-No. 6 Inter Milan in Champions League group stage (0-0, Sept. 16), beat then-No. 14 Dynamo Kiev at home in Champions League group stage (2-0, Sept. 29), drew at then-No. 18 Valencia (0-0, Oct. 17), lost at home to then-No. 23 Rubin Kazan (2-1, Oct. 20), drew at then-No. 11 Rubin Kazan (0-0, Nov. 4), beat then-No. 2 Inter Milan (2-0, Nov. 24), beat then-No. 7 Real Madrid (1-0, Nov. 29), won at then-No. 15 Dynamo Kiev (2-1, Dec. 9).
Commentary/recent results: For a few minutes last Wednesday it looked as if Barca's world might come crashing down. They were tied with Dynamo Kiev 1-1 and one goal away from missing the next round of the Champions League. Then Lionel Messi converted a free kick to give Barcelona the win and Inter Milan kept up their end of the bargain, defeating Rubin Kazan to give the blaugrana first place in the group. Also benefited from a phantom penalty call to defeat Espanyol Barcelona in the derby Saturday. There should be no dispute on the question of the best club in the world.
Upcoming schedule: That's it for this year. Their next game is Jan. 3 against Villareal.

2. Girondins Bordeaux
Last ranking: 4
Record: 17-4-2
Results of note: A scoreless draw at then-No. 18 Olympique Marseille (Aug. 30), drew at then No. 5 Juventus (1-1, Sept. 15), beat then-No. 16 Bayern Munich at home (2-1, Oct. 21), won at then-No. 19 Bayern Munich (2-0, Nov. 3), beat then-No. 6 Juventus at home (2-0, Nov. 25), won at then-No. 21 Olympique Lyonnais (1-0, Dec. 13).
Commentary/recent results: These guys are the second-best team in the world? Right now, yes. Their overall record matches up against Chelsea's and Manchester United's and their schedule, while not quite Premiership tough, has not been easy by any means (their Champions League group was much harder than either English team's for example). But we'll admittedly have to wait until the next stage(s) of the Champions League to find out how good Bordeaux truly are. For now, with this much evidence at our disposal, we think second place stands up to scrutiny. Last week was another solid week for les girondins, who after winning a meaningless game over Maccabi Haifa put Ligue Un rivals Olympique Lyon to the sword. A late strike by Moroccan international Marouane Chamakh was the difference in the game. Their lead in Ligue Un is four points over second-placed Montpellier, whom they face Wednesday.
Upcoming schedule: The aformentioned game at Montpellier Wednesday. Host Lorient Saturday.

3. Chelsea
Last ranking: 2
Record: 18-4-3
Results of note: Beat then-No. 10 Porto in Champions League group stage (1-0, Sept. 15), beat then-No. 7 Liverpool at home in Premiership (2-0, Oct. 4), beat then-No. 4 Man United at home in Premiership (1-0, Nov. 8), won at then-No. 12 Porto (1-0, Nov. 25), won at then-No. 9 Arsenal (3-0, Nov. 29).
Commentary/recent results: A pair of draws for Carlo Ancelotti's men. The first, against Nicosia (it's in Cyprus, which is like some island in the Mediterranean or something) was meaningless. The second, at home to Everton, wasn't. Believe it or not Blues were able to expand their lead atop the Premiership standings (to three points) because Man U did even worse than they did last week.
Upcoming schedule: Host Pompey Wednesday. At West Ham Sunday.

4. Manchester United
Last ranking: 3
Record: 17-5-2
Results of note: Beat then No. 4 Arsenal at home (2-1, Aug. 29), beat then-No. 13 Manchester City (4-3, Sept. 20), lost at then-No. 20 Liverpool (2-0, Oct. 25), lost at then-No. 1 Chelsea (1-0, Nov. 8)
Commentary/recent results: Red Devils had no problems defeating Wolfsburg in an all-but-meaningless Champions League match, then stumbled at home to Aston Villa, losing 1-0. They remain in second place in the Prem, now three points behind Chelsea.
Upcoming schedule: Host Wolves tomorrow. Visit Fulham Saturday.

5. Real Madrid
Last ranking: 7
Record: 14-4-3
Results of note: Lost at then-No. 9 Sevilla (2-1, Oct. 4). drew at then-No. 17 AC Milan (1-1, Nov. 3), lost at then-No. 3 Barcelona (1-0, Nov. 29), won at then-No. 12 Valencia (3-2, Dec. 12).
Commentary/recent results: The merengues won both their games last week; neither in particularly convincing fashion but they'll surely take it. The first, over Olympique Marseille, gave them first place in their Champions League group. The second, at Valencia, allows them to keep pace with Barcelona atop the Liga table. Five points separate the two rivals.
Upcoming schedule: Host Real Zaragossa Saturday. That's it until next year.

6. Inter Milan
Last ranking: 5
Record: 13-3-6
Results of note: Beat then-No. 10 AC Milan (4-0, Aug. 29), drew then-No. 2 Barcelona at home in Champions League group stage (0-0, Sept. 17), lost at Sampdoria (1-0, Sept. 26), drew then-No. 13 Dynamo Kiev at home (2-2, Oct. 20), beat then-No. 13. Dynamo Kiev on the road (2-1, Nov. 4), lost at then-No. 3 Barcelona (2-0, Nov. 24), lost at then-No. 11 Juventus (2-1, Dec. 5), beat then-No. 9 Rubin Kazan (2-0, Dec. 9).
Commentary/recent results: The nerazzurri completed their turnaround in the Champions League by defeating Rubin Kazan to qualify for the Round of 16. Yesterday they went ahead of Bergamo but settled for a 1-1 draw. However much like Chelsea this was enough for them to expand their lead atop the league table, in this instance to five points, because Juventus and AC Milan both lost games.
Upcoming schedule: Host Livorno in a Coppa Italia match Wednesday and Lazio Rome in Serie A Sunday.

7. Sevilla
Last ranking: 10
Record: 14-2-3
Results of note: Beat then No. 21 Unirea Urziceni in Champions League group stage at home (2-0, Sept. 16), won at then-No. 24 Glasgow Rangers in Champions League group stage (4-1, Sept. 30), defeated then-No. 1 Real Madrid at home (2-1, Oct. 4).
Commentary/recent results: Los palanganas reenter the top 10 after winning both games they played last week, at home over Glasgow Rangers and on the road at Sporting Gijon. The latter result moves them back into third place in the Spanish Liga, two points over Valencia (who lost to Real Madrid). It's nine points to first place Barcelona; four to second-placed Real Madrid. Is it too early to count these guys out of the title chase? No, though they did defeat Real Madrid a few months ago. But for now a top 10 spot is still in the offing, though we'll have to wait and see how they do in the next stage(s) of the Champions League. Their group was a joke.
Upcoming schedule: Host Getafe Saturday.

8. Arsenal
Last ranking: 11
Record: 14-5-2
Results of note: Lost at then-No. 5 Man United (2-1, Aug. 29), lost at then-No. 16 Man City (4-2, Sept. 12), beat then-No. 15 Olympiakos at home in Champions League group play (2-0, Sept. 29), beat then-No. 20 Liverpool at home in League Cup (2-1, Oct. 28), lost to then-No. 1 Chelsea at home in Premiership (3-0, Nov. 29).
Commentary/recent results: Gunners lost their Champions League match at Olympiakos 1-0 midweek, but it was meaningless for them and played mainly by scrubs so we won't hold it against them. Did well to beat Liverpool yesterday, reversing a 1-0 halftime deficit to win 2-1 and plunge Rafa Benitez' side further into their misery.
Upcoming schedule: At Burnley Wednesday. Host Hull City, Saturday. An intriguing match with Aston Villa is up a week from Saturday. That will be played at the Emirates (not the country).

9. AC Milan
Last ranking: 6
Record: 11-4-7
Results of note: Lost at then-No. 8 Inter Milan (4-0, Aug. 27), won at then-No. 16 Olympique Marseille (2-1, Sept. 15), won at then-No. 2 Real Madrid (3-2, Oct. 21), drew then-No. 5 Real Madrid at home (1-1, Nov. 3), drew against then-No. 22 Olympique Marseille (1-1, Nov. 25).
Commentary/recent results: The rossoneri had to rally for a 1-1 draw at lowly FC Zurich to advance out of their Champions League group. That was bad, but what happened yesterday was worse: A 2-0 home loss to Palermo that drops them five points behind crosstown rivals Inter in the scudetto chase. That loss was Milan's first since an ugly home defeat to FC Zurich back on Sept. 30.
Upcoming schedule: Visit Fiorentina Saturday.

10. Bayern Munich
Last ranking: 20
Record: 14-4-7
Results of note: Beat then-No. 11 VfL Wolfsburg at home (3-0, Aug. 28), lost at then-No. 22 Hamburg SV (1-0, Sept. 26), drew then-No. 5 Juventus at home in Champions League group stage (0-0, Sept. 30), lost at then-No. 17 Girondins Bordeaux (2-1, Oct. 21), lost at home to then-No. 7 Bordeaux (2-0, Nov. 3), tied then-No. 19 Bayer Leverkusen at home (1-1, Nov. 22), won at then-No. 8 Juventus (4-1, Dec. 8).
Commentary/recent results: A massive week for Bayern, who take a well deserved double digit leap in our rankings. The biggest game was obviously the midweek encounter at Turin's Olympic Stadium, where they amazingly won 4-1 to book advancement in the UEFA Champions League. They didn't rest on their laurels though, defeating Bochum 5-1 Saturday. If you're keeping score that's a 9-2 goal difference on the week. Not bad. They are now all the way up to third in the Bundesliga, just two points behind leaders Leverkusen. We were dangerously close to dropping Bayern from our rankings altogether a few weeks ago. Now? A top 10 spot may be theirs for a little while.
Upcoming schedule: Host Hertha Berlin Saturday. That should be tough. Not.

11. Porto
Last ranking: 14
Record: 14-4-1
Results of note: Lost at then-No. 3 Chelsea in Champions League group stage (1-0, Sept. 15), lost at home to then-No. 1 Chelsea (1-0, Nov. 25).
Commentary/recent results: The Dragoes had no problem in either game last week, winning 3-0 at Atletico Madrid in a meaningless Champions League encounter at midweek and defeating Vitoria Setubal yesterday. They move to within one point of Liga Sagres leaders Benfica and Sporting Braga with the victory
Upcoming schedule: Visit Benfica Sunday with a chance to take first place in Liga Sagres depending on what happens with Braga, who play at Pacos de Ferreira.

12. PSV Eindhoven
Last ranking: 13
Record: 18-0-5
Results of note: Drew at Twente (1-1, Aug. 9).
Commentary/recent results: Defeated defending Dutch champs AZ Alkmaar Saturday by 1-0. Though they remain unbeaten in all competition, PSV are only second in the Dutch Eredivisie, two points behind Twente.
Upcoming schedule:Close out the Europa League campaign at CFR Cluj Wednesday. PSV have wrapped up first place in the group so the game is meaningless. Visit Roda Kerkrade in Eredivisie action Sunday.

13. Olympiakos
Last ranking: 16
Record: 14-3-4
Results of note: Beat then-No. 17 AZ Alkmaar at home in Champions League group stage (1-0, Sept. 16), lost at then-No. 12 Arsenal in Champions League group stage (2-0, Sept. 29).
Commentary/recent results: Olympiakos defeated Arsenal at midweek to book their spot in the Champions League Round of 16, but we aren't giving them full credit for the victory because Arsenal showed up with scrubs. They also won their league match on the weekend to hold onto first place in the Greek Super League. Their lead over Panathinaikos remains one point.
Upcoming schedule: Visit Saloniki Sunday before taking a 16 day break. I thought Orthodox holidays were a week later? Whatever.

14. Rubin Kazan
Last Ranking: 9
Record: 20-6-8*
Results of note: In Champions League group stage lost at then-No. 20 Dynamo Kiev (3-1, Sept. 16), drew then-No. 6 Inter Milan at home (1-1, Oct. 6), won at then-No. 1 Barcelona (2-1, Oct. 20), drew then-No. 3 Barcelona at home (0-0, Nov. 3), drew then-No. 13 Dynamo Kiev at home (0-0, Nov. 24), lost at then-No. 5 Inter Milan (2-0, Dec 9).
Commentary/recent results: The Russian season is over. Kazan are champions. They'll play in the next round of the Europa League due to Dynamo Kiev losing their last Champions League group stage match at home to Barcelona.
Upcoming schedule: What starts first, the Russian league or the next stage of the Europa League? Anybody know?
*Russian league starts in the spring.

15. Juventus
Last ranking: 8
Record: 11-8-5
Results of note: Drew then-No. 9 Girondins Bordeaux at home in Champions League group stage (1-1, Sept. 16), drew at then-No. 17 Bayern Munich in Champions League group stage (0-0, Sept. 30), lost at then-No. 11 Bordeaux (2-0, Nov. 25), beat then-No. 3 Inter Milan (2-1, Dec. 5), lost at home to then-No. 20 Bayern Munich (3-1, Dec. 8).
Commentary/recent results: Just when they were starting to look like a top 10 club again the bianconeri had an ugly week that throws into question whether they even belong in the top 25 at all. First came the home loss to Bayern to send them to the Europa League at the German club's expense. Then lost at Bari, 3-1. Amazingly, they are only six points out of first place in Serie A and one behind second-placed AC Milan.
Upcoming schedule: Host last-placed Catania, Sunday.

16. Valencia
Last ranking: 12
Record: 11-2-6
Results of note: Defeated then-No. 9 Sevilla at home (2-0, Aug. 30), drew then-No. 1 Barcelona at home (0-0, Oct. 17), lost at home to then-No. 7 Real Madrid (3-2, Dec. 12).
Commentary/recent results: Lost at home to Real Madrid.
Upcoming schedule: Visit Genoa in the Europa League Thursday needing a win to secure first place in the group. Then play at Deportivo La Coruna in their last match of the year Sunday.

17. Dynamo Kiev
Last ranking: 15
Record: 15-4-3
Results of note: Won home match against then-No. 22 Rubin Kazan in Champions League group stage (3-1, Sept. 16), lost at then-No. 2 Barcelona in Champions League group stage, drew at then-No. 4 Inter Milan (2-2, Oct. 20), lost at then-No. 22 Shakhtar Donetsk in domestic cup (2-0, Oct. 28), lost at home to then-No. 2 Inter Milan (2-1, Nov. 4), defeated then-No. 14 Shakhtar Donetsk (3-0, Nov. 21), drew at then-No. 8 Rubin Kazan (0-0, Nov. 24), lost at home to then-No. 1 Barcelona (2-1, Dec. 9).
Commentary/recent results: After losing a close one to Barcelona, Kiev rebounded to win their Ukrainian league match over the weekend to hold onto first place in the Premier-Liga. They are in all likelihood the best team to not have any European competition after new year's.
Upcoming schedule: Nothing until February.

18. Benfica Lisbon
Last ranking: 22
Record: 15-3-3
Results of note: Lost at then-No. 22 Sporting Braga (2-0, Oct. 31), trounced Everton 5-0 in Europa League (Oct. 22)
Commentary/recent results: Drew Olhanense 2-2 on Saturday. Luckily for them, second placed Sporting Braga managed just a scoreless draw in their game. The two sides remain even on points atop the Liga Sagres table.
Upcoming schedule: Host AEK Athens in a meaningless Europa League match Thursday. Then host Porto Sunday in a highly meaningful Liga Sagres encounter. Porto trail Benfica and Braga by just one point in the standings.

19. Manchester City
Last ranking: 17
Record: 10-1-8
Results of note: Beat then-No. 8 Arsenal at home (4-2, Sept. 12), lost to then-No. 4 Manchester United (4-3, Sept. 20), beat then-No. 10 Arsenal at home in Carling Cup (3-0, Dec. 2), beat then-No. 1 Chelsea at home in Premiership (1-0, Dec. 5).
Commentary/recent results: A week after their uber-impressive victory over Chelsea Citizens picked up with their habit of drawing inferior teams. They did so at Bolton Wanderers Saturday, 3-3.
Upcoming schedule: It's off to White Hart Lane for what will probably be another draw against Tottenham Hotspur. They trail fifth-placed Spurs by a point in the Premiership, albeit with a game in hand. Host Sunderland Saturday.

20. Bayer Leverkusen
Last ranking: 18
Record: 8-1-8
Results of note: Won at then-No. 15 VfL Wolfsburg (3-2, Sept. 12), drew at then-No. 14 Hamburg SV (0-0, Oct. 17), drew at then-No. 24 Bayern Munich (1-1, Nov. 22).
Commentary/recent results: Another draw for Leverkusen, this one against last-placed Hertha Berlin. Their Bundesliga lead is down to one point, with Schalke 04 (second) and Bayern Munich (third) charging hard.
Upcoming schedule: Host Borussia Moenchengladbach Saturday.

21. Shakhtar Donetsk
Last ranking: 19
Record: 17-3-4
Results of note: Lost UEFA Supercup to then-No. 2 Barcelona (1-0 in overtime, Aug. 28), beat then-No. 10 Dynamo Kiev at home in domestic cup match (2-0, Oct. 28), lost at then No. 16 Dynamo Kiev (3-0, Nov. 21).
Commentary/recent results: Won both Ukrainian league matches to pull within two points of league leaders Dynamo Kiev.
Upcoming schedule: Visit Partizan Belgrade in a meaningless Europa League encounter Wednesday (they've wrapped up first place in the group). Then the long, cold Ukrainian winter. Play resumes Feb. 27.

22. Aston Villa
Last ranking: -
Record: 10-3-5
Results of note: Won at then-No. 7 Liverpool (3-1, Aug. 24), beat then-No. 3 Chelsea at home (2-1, Oct. 17), drew then-No. 10 Manchester City at home (1-1, Oct. 5), won at then-No. 3 Manchester United (1-0, Dec. 12).
Commentary/recent results: So fourth place in the Premiership has got to count for something, right? Right, if you pull off quality victories. Anybody can be fourth while beating up on the Wigans and Burnleys of the world. Heck, even Spurs could pull that off! Oh wait, they did pull that off for a little while. Anyway, the catalyst for putting Villa here is their impressive 1-0 victory at Old Trafford Saturday, their third in a row. Martin O'Neill's men haven't lost since a 2-1 decision at West Ham Nov. 4. Third-placed Arsenal have just two points on Villains, though also a game in hand.
Upcoming schedule: Visit Sunderland Tuesday. Host Stoke City Saturday. A date with third-placed Arsenal is on the docket Dec. 27. Remember last year when Villa were ahead of Arsenal for a few weeks and everybody said they'd make the Champions League and stuff? Maybe that will happen again. Maybe this time Villains will stick, or at least manage a fourth placed finish. Or at least make it to Europe.

23. Fenerbahce Istanbul
Last ranking: -
Record: 14-5-1
Results of note: Beat Galatasaray (3-1, Oct. 25), beat then-No. 20 Twente (Dec. 2, 1-0).
Commentary/recent results: Fener defeated some club by the name of MKE Ankaragücü. Don't ask me how to pronounce that. They are tied for first place in the Turkcell Super League, holding the edge on Kayserispor on goal difference. Galatasaray are just a point behind, with Bursaspor and Besiktas a point behind that. Looks like it's going to be a tight race in Turkey.
Upcoming schedule: Host Sheriff Tiraspol in a meaningless Europa League match Thursday (Fener have the group wrapped up). Also host Trabzonspor Sunday.

24. RSC Anderlecht
Last ranking: 25
Record: 16-5-4
Results of note: Lost Champions League qualifier against Olympique Lyon, drew Ajax Amsterdam at home in Europa League group stage (1-1, Oct. 1)
Commentary/recent results: Won at Westerlo Friday to increase their lead in the Belgian Jupiler league to seven points over FC Bruges.
Upcoming schedule: Host Ajax Amsterdam a Thursday in a match that is unfortunately meaningless in their Europa League group. Also host Bruges Sunday.

25.OSC Lille
Last ranking: -
Record: 10-7-5
Results of note: Beat then-No. 7 Girondins Bordeaux at home (2-0, Nov. 8), lost at then-No. 14 Valencia (3-1, Dec. 2), beat then-No. 18 Olympique Lyon (4-3, Dec. 6).
Commentary/recent results: Go ahead and laugh. L'OSC are third in France with several quality victories to their name. They stand to qualify for the next stage of the Europa League from a tough group. What's even more impressive is they started the season with just one point from their first four games (that lessens the load of seven losses on the year). Last week they won both Ligue Un matches by a combined 8-0 score (a pair of 4-0 decisions over St. Etienne and Monaco).
Upcoming schedule: Host Slavia Prague in a vital Europa League match (win and they're through to the next round) and Le Mans Sunday.

Dropping Out:
Olympique Lyonnais (21) after losing to Bordeaux, Werder Bremen (22) after losing at home to Schalke 04, LDU Quito (24) because I'm sick of having to defend them every week and because, seriously, they aren't the 25th best club in the world.

Also receiving consideration (in rough order of consideration received):
CSKA Moscow, Fiorentina, AS Roma, FK Copenhagen, Schalke 04.

Guess what? Bayern's back!

Bayern Munich ralled for four straight goals at the Stadio Olimpico to upset Juventus Turin 4-1 and book an improbable advancement to the UEFA Champions League elimination round. The win completes a stunning turnaround for the Bavarian club, who appeared dead in the water in Group A just two matchdays ago. After losing 2-0 to Girondins Bordeaux at home on Nov. 3, Bayern sat third in the group a distant four points behind Juventus. But Juve's loss at Bordeaux Nov. 25, coupled with Bayern's slim victory over Maccabi Haifa, set the stage for today's turn of events.

David Trezeguet put the hosts up on 19 minutes before Bayern keeper Hans Joerg Butt converted a penalty to level matters. Amazingly considering he is a) a goalkeeper and b) has never played in Italy, it was the third time Butt scored against Juventus in his career. The prior two goals came in Champions League matches for Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburg SV. At 1-1 Juventus still would have advanced, however. But the Germans came out firing in the second half and Ivica Olic but the guests up on 52 minutes. After Trezeguet missed from point blank range 15 minutes later, Mario Lopez Gomez doubled Bayern's lead on 83 minutes and effectively put the game to bed.

The victory is the fourth in succession for Louis van Gaal's side, who have now not lost in six matches dating to the Bordeaux game Nov. 3. Their domestic run is even more impressive, dating to a Sept. 26 home loss to Hamburg SV. Still, Bayern is just fourth in the Bundesliga, though only four points behind the leaders Leverkusen.

There will obviously be consequences in Soccer Source's Top 25 rankings, where Juve has held a top 10 spot most of the season while Bayern has taken up the rear (when they made the list at all).

The world's top 25 soccer clubs, Nov. 30, 2009

A very telling weekend in world soccer is behind us. In England, Chelsea passed the latest test thrown its way thanks in no small part to the contributions of this man. In Spain, Real Madrid and Barcelona fought each other tooth and nail in a match that was decided in Barca's favor. In Italy, Inter Milan expanded its lead atop the Serie A standings--and has a new follower giving chase. How did it all reflect in the top 25? Take a look:

1. Chelsea
Last ranking: 1
Record (wins-losses-ties, in all competition; two-leg match-ups count as one): 18-2-1
Commentary/recent results: It was a stellar week for Chelsea, who lived up to the billing of the best soccer club in the world. They first won at Porto to wrap up first place in their Champions League group. The second victory, at Emirates, was even more impressive. True, Gunners played them tough, particularly in the second half, and true Chelsea decided the game with two lightning quick plays in a three-minute span on the stroke of halftime. But there should be no doubt who the better team was on the pitch. The same one that's best in England, Europe, and the world.
Upcoming schedule: Play at Blackburn in a League Cup tie Wednesday and at Manchester City Saturday. The latter game could be tough. But probably not.

2. Barcelona
Last ranking: 3
Record: 14-1-5
Results of note: Beat Shakhtar Donetsk (at the time ranked 14th) in overtime in the UEFA SuperCup, Aug. 29).
Commentary/recent results: A terrific week for Barca, who saw off two different top 10 clubs. Granted the second victory, over archrivals Real Madrid, was a little lucky as well. But props to Pep Guardiola for the Zlatan Ibrahimovic substitution, which turned the match in Barca's favor. The return match at the Bernabeu (sixth-biggest 'soccer mecca') is sure to be very interesting. Barca now have a two point lead in La Liga but you have the feeling we're just getting started with the title race, which should come down to the last weekend of the season.
Upcoming schedule: At Deportivo Xerez Wednesday and Deportivo La Coruna Saturday. The latter match could be interesting because La Coruna sit fifth in La Liga.

3. Inter Milan
Last ranking: 2
Record: 12-2-5
Results of note: Beat then-No. 10 AC Milan (4-0, Aug. 29), drew then-No. 2 Barcelona at home in Champions League group stage (0-0, Sept. 17), lost at Sampdoria (1-0, Sept. 26), drew then-No. 13 Dynamo Kiev at home (2-2, Oct. 20), beat then-No. 13. Dynamo Kiev on the road (2-1, Nov. 4), lost at then-No. 3 Barcelona (2-0, Nov. 24).
Commentary/recent results: The nerazzurri went down in flames at Camp Nou, but thanks to Rubin Kazan and Dynamo Kiev not doing each other any favors are still in good shape to advance out of their Champions League. But things are looking good domestically, where they dropped Fiorentina 1-0 on a late penalty yesterday. Along with Juventus' loss at Cagliari it gives Inter an eight point lead atop the Serie A table. That may be enough.
Upcoming schedule: The aforementioned Juventus are up Saturday. Win and the lead is 11 points. But the game is in Turin. Expect Juve to mount a challenge for this one, especially after losing yesterday.

4. Manchester United
Last ranking: 5
Record: 14-4-2
Results of note: Beat then No. 4 Arsenal at home (2-1, Aug. 29), beat then-No. 13 Manchester City (4-3, Sept. 20), lost at then-No. 20 Liverpool (2-0, Oct. 25), lost at then-No. 1 Chelsea (1-0, Nov. 8)
Commentary/recent results: Man United needed just a point from their midweek encounter with Besiktas Istanbul to book first place in their Champions League group. Besiktas has been complete crap so you really would have expected Red Devils to do at least that. But it didn't happen and Sir Alex' men lost 1-0 at Old Trafford. So now it will come down to the final matchday Dec. 8 when they host German champs Wolfsburg, again needing just a point to book first place. Anyway, what Man U did at Pompey on Saturday was significantly better. Avram Grant's new club did not look like a last-placed team and particularly in the first half were right there with Red Devils. But three second half goals put an end to that.
Upcoming schedule: Host Spurs in a League Cup match tomorrow. Visit West Ham on Saturday.

5. Girondins Bordeaux
Last ranking: 11
Record: 14-4-2
Results of note: A scoreless draw at then-No. 18 Olympique Marseille (Aug. 30), drew at then No. 5 Juventus (1-1, Sept. 15), beat then-No. 16 Bayern Munich at home (2-1, Oct. 21), won at then-No. 19 Bayern Munich (2-0, Nov. 3), beat then-No. 6 Juventus at home (2-0, Nov. 25).
Commentary/recent results: Les girondins are back. Back in first place in Ligue Un after defeating Nancy 3-0 yesterday. Back as a veritable Champions League contender after beating Juventus by 2-0 and clinching first place in a very challenging group. Back in the top 10.
Upcoming schedule: Host Paris Saint Germain Saturday.

6. AC Milan
Last ranking: 10
Record: 10-3-6
Results of note: Lost at then-No. 8 Inter Milan (4-0, Aug. 27), won at then-No. 16 Olympique Marseille (2-1, Sept. 15), won at then-No. 2 Real Madrid (3-2, Oct. 21), drew then-No. 5 Real Madrid at home (1-1, Nov. 3), drew against then-No. 22 Olympique Marseille (1-1, Nov. 25).
Commentary/recent results: The rossoneri take a healthy leap in the rankings but it might have been even greater had they managed to defeat Marseille at midweek. Instead the draw means they will likely need a result in the final matchday at FC Zurich (then again, how difficult should that be? Yes, we know Milan lost the first game at home. Don't expect history to repeat itself). More impressive was Milan's dramatic win over Catania yesterday. The two sides appeared headed for a scoreless draw when substitute Klaas Jan Huntelaar struck for two goals in stoppage time. Milan take over second place in Serie A with the result. Perhaps more importantly, that's the type of result that gives a team morale. Leonardo's side already have several "quality victories" to their credit (see above). Don't look now, but they haven't lost since that ugly home decision to FC Zurich back on Sept. 30.
Upcoming schedule: Host Sampdoria Saturday.

7. Real Madrid
Last ranking: 7
Record: 11-4-3
Results of note: Lost at then-No. 9 Sevilla (2-1, Oct. 4). drew at then-No. 17 AC Milan (1-1, Nov. 3), lost at then-No. 3 Barcelona (1-0, Nov. 29).
Commentary/recent results: The merengues had no problems with FC Zurich in midweek Champions League action, winning 1-0 to take first place in the group. They didn't play badly yesterday either, but lost 1-0 at archrivals Barcelona in a thrilling encounter at Camp Nou. Real dominated the early stages of the match and were unlucky to not get an early goal or two. Karim Benzema had the equalizer on his foot but it was not to be. Still, it was an encouraging performance from Real's point-of-view. The Liga race is sure to be very, very close. More importantly, for our purposes, Real are allowed to keep their place at No. 7 despite the loss.
Upcoming schedule: Host Almeira Saturday before finishing up the Champions League group stage at Marseille a week from tomorrow. They'll likely need to win that because FC Zurich can't be expected to give them much help against Milan.

8. Sevilla
Last ranking: 4
Record: 12-2-2
Results of note: Beat then No. 21 Unirea Urziceni in Champions League group stage at home (2-0, Sept. 16), won at then-No. 24 Glasgow Rangers in Champions League group stage (4-1, Sept. 30), defeated then-No. 1 Real Madrid at home (2-1, Oct. 4).
Commentary/recent results: It was not a good week for los palanganas, who missed a chance to put the wraps on their Champions League group, losing 1-0 at Unirea Urziceni. The Romanian side now very well may end up winning the group--but probably not because Sevilla host hapless Glasgow Rangers on the final matchday. Then they blew two points at home against Malaga, though in fairness they did show some heart in coming back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to draw 2-2. Nevertheless, this is enough to discount their ranking by a significant margin.
Upcoming schedule: Host Valladolid Sunday.

9. Rubin Kazan
Last Ranking: 8
Record: 20-5-8*
Results of note: In Champions League group stage lost at then-No. 20 Dynamo Kiev (3-1, Sept. 16), drew then-No. 6 Inter Milan at home (1-1, Oct. 6), won at then-No. 1 Barcelona (2-1, Oct. 20), drew then-No. 3 Barcelona at home (0-0, Nov. 3), drew then-No. 13 Dynamo Kiev at home (0-0, Nov. 24).
Commentary/recent results: The Russians had a golden opportunity to put some distance between themselves and everybody else in their Champions League group, facing their easiest task of their European schedule to date. Alas, they were unable to take advantage and dropped two crucial points in a scoreless home draw to Dynamo Kiev. Kazan did rebound to win their Russian league match yesterday but that was completely meaningless seeing as they had already wrapped up the title.
Upcoming schedule: The Russian campaign is over. The European one could be soon as well. That will be decided a week from Wednesday at the San Siro. Kazan will need a win to get past Inter and wrap up a spot in the elimination round. Lose and they could still survive to see Europa League action depending on what happens in Kiev between Dynamo and Barcelona. The Ukranian side are one point behind Kazan in the group.
*Russian league starts in the spring.

10. Arsenal
Last ranking: 9
Record: 12-3-2
Results of note: Lost at then-No. 5 Man United (2-1, Aug. 29), lost at then-No. 16 Man City (4-2, Sept. 12), beat then-No. 15 Olympiakos at home in Champions League group play (2-0, Sept. 29), beat then-No. 20 Liverpool at home in League Cup (2-1, Oct. 28), lost to then-No. 1 Chelsea at home in Premiership (3-0, Nov. 29).
Commentary/recent results: Gunners had no problems with Standard Liege at midweek, but yesterday's loss to Chelsea hurts. It leaves Arsenal 11 points behind the leaders at this, the midpoint of the Premiership season. True, Gooners have a game in hand. Assuming they win that makeup game, they will still be eight points in arrears. Not entirely insurmountable. But they're going to need more weapons in the January transfer window.
Upcoming schedule: Visit Man City in a Carling Cup tie Wednesday. Host Stoke City Saturday.

11. Juventus
Last ranking: 6
Record: 10-6-5
Results of note: Drew then-No. 9 Girondins Bordeaux at home in Champions League group stage (1-1, Sept. 16), drew at then-No. 17 Bayern Munich in Champions League group stage (0-0, Sept. 30), lost at then-No. 11 Bordeaux (2-0, Nov. 25).
Commentary/recent results: The bianconeri had a very, very bad week. They lost at Bordeaux, 2-0 and now face the very real possibility of missing the elimination round if they lose the final group stage match at home to Bayern Munich a week from tomorrow. Then they were defeated by the identical score at Cagliari to drop eight points behind Serie A leaders Inter Milan. Not good.
Upcoming schedule: A crucial week looms. First host Inter Saturday before facing Bayern Munich a week from tomorrow. Win or draw the latter match and they're through. Lose, and it's Europa League time.

12. PSV Eindhoven
Last ranking: 16
Record: 15-0-5
Results of note: Drew at Twente (1-1, Aug. 9).
Commentary/recent results: This ranking might be a bit generous but everybody else in the second tier lost games. Fact is PSV are unbeaten in all competition which counts for something. Last week they won at Sparta Rotterdam 3-2 on Friday to preserve their unbeaten record in all competition.
Upcoming schedule: Host Sparta Prague in (meaningless) Europa League action Thursday before returning to Eredivisie action Sunday. Next week a date with defending Dutch champions AZ Alkmaar is on the schedule.

13. Porto
Last ranking: 12
Record: 11-4-1
Results of note: Lost at then-No. 3 Chelsea in Champions League group stage (1-0, Sept. 15), lost at home to then-No. 1 Chelsea (1-0, Nov. 25).
Commentary/recent results: The Dragoes lost at home to Chelsea in a match that was almost entirely meaningless. They'll advance to the elimination round as the second-placed team in the group. They rebounded to win their weekend domestic league match, which allowed them to pick up two points on league leaders Benfica (who played a scoreless draw in the derby with Sporting).
Upcoming schedule: Visit Vitoria Guimaraes before playing out the Champions League string at Atletico Madrid next week.

14. Dynamo Kiev
Last ranking: 13
Record: 13-3-3
Commentary/recent results: A pair of scoreless draws for Dynamo, the first one a decent result (at Rubin Kazan) that nevertheless does them no favors in the Champions League "group of death" (yes, we're going there) the second one less so (at home against some Ukrainian club). They still maintain a four point lead in the Ukrainian league despite the result.
Upcoming schedule: Host Barca in the final Champions League matchday next week.

15. Valencia
Last ranking: 14
Record: 9-1-6
Results of note: Defeated then-No. 9 Sevilla at home (2-0, Aug. 30), drew then-No. 1 Barcelona at home (0-0, Oct. 17).
Commentary/recent results: Los xotos drew Mallorca 1-1 at home. Mallorca are sixth, but Valencia were supposed to be the 14th-best club in the world.
Upcoming schedule: A crucial Europa League match against Lille. It's the penultimate match day and Lille, Valencia and Genoa are in a logjam for the two top spots; Lille currently have a one point edge over the other two. So Wednesday's match, which Valencia host, is crucial. They also visit Athletic Bilbao Sunday.

16. Bayer Leverkusen
Last ranking: 19
Record: 8-1-6
Results of note: Won at then-No. 15 VfL Wolfsburg (3-2, Sept. 12), drew at then-No. 14 Hamburg SV (0-0, Oct. 17), drew at then-No. 24 Bayern Munich (1-1, Nov. 22).
Commentary/recent results: Bayer trounced VfB Stuttgart 4-0 yesterday. The same VfB Stuttgart that might very well make it to the Champions League elimination round. Bayer increase their Bundesliga lead to three points.
Upcoming schedule: Visit Hannover 96 Saturday.

17. Shakhtar Donetsk
Last ranking: 17
Record: 14-3-3
Results of note: Lost UEFA Supercup to then-No. 2 Barcelona (1-0 in overtime, Aug. 28), beat then-No. 10 Dynamo Kiev at home in domestic cup match (2-0, Oct. 28), lost at then No. 16 Dynamo Kiev (3-0, Nov. 21).
Commentary/recent results: Won their domestic league match 3-0 on Saturday.
Upcoming schedule: Host Bruges in a meaningless Europa League encounter Thursday and some Ukrainian club Sunday.

18. Olympique Lyonnais
Last ranking: 15
Record: 12-3-5
Results of note: Beat then-No. 18 Fiorentina at home in Champions League group stage (1-0, Sept. 16), won at then-No. 20 Liverpool (2-1, Oct. 20).
Commentary/recent results: It was not a good week for l'OL, who lost at Fiorentina and managed just a scoreless home draw with Stade Rennes. They relinquish a share of first place with the latter result. The former didn't cost them anything because it eliminated Liverpool. Still, our faith in Lyon is waning...
Upcoming schedule: At Lille Sunday.

19. Olympiakos
Last ranking: 23
Record: 13-3-4
Results of note: Beat then-No. 17 AZ Alkmaar at home in Champions League group stage (1-0, Sept. 16), lost at then-No. 12 Arsenal in Champions League group stage (2-0, Sept. 29).
Commentary/recent results: Olympiakos missed a chance to book their spot in the elimination round of the Champions League when they played AZ Alkmaar to a scoreless draw in Holland at midweek. Now they might need a point from their encounter with Arsenal next week, depending on what happens in the other game between Alkmaar and Standard Liege. So why did Olympiakos take such a leap in the rankings? That's because of what happened over the weekend, when they defeated Panathinaikos 2-0 to take over first place from the Athens side. And as everybody knows (right?) extra weight is given to teams that hold first place in their domestic league. Well, sometimes.
Upcoming schedule: Visit AO Xanthi Saturday, before the aforementioned clash with Arsenal.

20. Twente
Last ranking: -
Record: 17-4-1
Results of note: Lost a Champions League qualifier against Sporting Lisbon (1-1 on aggregate), defeated Ajax Amsterdam at home (1-0, Nov. 8).
Commentary/recent results: Twente return to the Top 25 for the first time since Oct. 19. Since that time they've rattled off seven straight victories, including one over Ajax Amsterdam.
Upcoming schedule:

21. Werder Bremen
Last ranking: 18
Record: 13-1-7
Results of note: Drew at Bayern Munich (1-1, Aug. 18), drew at Leverkusen (0-0, Sept. 20)
Commentary/recent results: Drew defending champions Wolfsburg 2-2 at home Saturday.
Upcoming schedule: Host Nacional Funchal in the Europa League Thursday (they've already advanced but can win the group with a victory) and visit Cologne Sunday.

22. Bayern Munich
Last ranking: 24
Record: 11-4-7
Results of note: Beat then-No. 11 VfL Wolfsburg at home (3-0, Aug. 28), lost at then-No. 22 Hamburg SV (1-0, Sept. 26), drew then-No. 5 Juventus at home in Champions League group stage (0-0, Sept. 30), lost at then-No. 17 Girondins Bordeaux (2-1, Oct. 21), lost at home to then-No. 7 Bordeaux (2-0, Nov. 3), tied then-No. 19 Bayer Leverkusen at home (1-1, Nov. 22).
Commentary/recent results: Bayern passed both tests last week, beating Maccabi Haifa at home to stay alive in the Champions League (they need to win at Juventus though to advance) and winning at Hannover 96 yesterday.
Upcoming schedule: Host Borussia Moenchengladbach Friday before the aforementioned clash with Juventus a week from tomorrow.

23. Ajax Amsterdam
Last ranking: 20
Record: 13-2-4
Results of note: Lost at PSV Eindhoven (4-3, Aug. 16), drew at RSC Anderlecht in Europa League (1-1, Oct. 1), lost at Twente (1-0, Nov. 11)
Commentary/recent results: Won easily at Vitesse Arnheim, 5-1 yesterday. Ajax sit third in Holland's Eredivisie, six points behind Twente. Yes, we've moved them and Anderlecht down despite wins. The overall body of work just isn't as impressive.
Upcoming schedule: A meaningless Europa League game Wednesday followed by FC Utrecht.

24. RSC Anderlecht
Last ranking: 21
Record: 15-4-4
Results of note: Lost Champions League qualifier against Olympique Lyon, drew Ajax Amsterdam at home in Europa League group stage (1-1, Oct. 1)
Commentary/recent results: Won their Jupiler League game Friday night to maintain their five point lead over FC Bruges. Yes, we've moved them and Ajax down despite wins. The overall body of work just isn't as impressive.
Upcoming schedule: Host Dynamo Zagreb in meaningless Europa League action Thursday, followed by another Jupiler League game Sunday.

25. LDU Quito
Last ranking: 25
Record: 11-2-4
Results of note: Defeated Velez Sarsfield in the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals.
Commentary/recent results: The defending Copa Libertadores champions are well on their way to an improbable "double", with victory in the Copa Sudamericana now just 90 minutes away after they trounced Brazil's Fluminense 5-1 in the first leg of the final.
Upcoming schedule: The return leg at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro Wednesday.

Dropping Out:
Olympique Marseille (22) after losing at home to Lens, though they did manage a 1-1 draw at AC Milan and have an outside shot at advancing to the Champions League elimination round;

Also receiving consideration (in rough order of consideration received):
CFC Genoa, Schalke 04, Besiktas Istanbul.

Please Note:
We've officially dropped the goofy "bylaw" that required placing clubs from South and Central America in this list regardless if they deserved it. We'll still include those teams if the situation calls for it, but not just because.

Commentary:
As you can tell there was a significant shakeup in the rankings. The top spot remains as before, but nearly everything else was rearranged. The big winner of the week was Girondins Bordeaux, who reestablished themselves as a team to be reckoned with. Another big winner was AC Milan and that without even winning both their games! But Milan are for real and deserve the perch we've placed them on. So there. Their countrymen Juventus, on the other hand, fell sharply thanks to two losses. Time will tell if they can recover, but this week may very well go down as when they disappeared from the list of contenders for the elusive season-ending top spot. Sevilla also suffered from a lackluster week but we have not yet seen them tested by teams outside of Spain. That will happen in the Champions League elimination round. Some (okay, a lot) of the luster has faded from the Eastern European upstarts Rubin Kazan and Dynamo Kiev. Will either be able to recapture it? That will be determined next week.

Over to you, readers:
Do you agree with Chelsea as the top ranked club? Or did Barca show enough yesterday to warrant the billing? Is Sevilla's rating inflated? What about PSV's? Should other clubs be included here? If so, who are they?

The world's top 25 soccer clubs, Sept. 28, 2009

Some major upsets in Italy and England had the potential to shake up the Top 10 this week. Did they? A little. Take a look:

1. Real Madrid
Last ranking: 1
Record (wins-losses-ties, in all competition; two-leg match-ups count as one): 6-0-0
Results of note: None yet.
Commentary/recent results: Real beat both opponents last week, Villareal and Tenerife, without giving up a goal. Can't find much fault with that. This is not the Villareal of years' past, however. The yellow submarine have just two points from their first five games, which puts them in the penultimate spot in the Liga standings. Not that any of that is of concern to Real Madrid. The merengues are rolling.
Upcoming schedule: Things finally get a bit more interesting when Real host Olympique Marseille in the Champions League Wednesday. They then get a lot more interesting with a trip to Sevilla Sunday. This should give us an idea of whether Real are truly deserving of the top slot. We expect them to not only win both games, but win them decisively.

2. Barcelona
Last ranking: 2
Record: 7-0-1
Results of note: Beat Shakhtar Donetsk (at the time ranked 14th) in overtime in the UEFA SuperCup, Aug. 29, drew at then-No. 6 Inter Milan in Champions League group stage (0-0, Sept. 16).
Commentary/recent results: Like Real Madrid, Barcelona won both their league games last week with ease. The two sides are already atop the Liga standings, each with perfect 5-0-0 records. Will it last? Yeah.
Upcoming schedule: Host Dynamo Kiev when the Champions League returns to action tomorrow. Host Almeira Saturday.

3. Manchester United
Last ranking: 4
Record: 8-1-0
Results of note: Beat then No. 4 Arsenal at home (2-1, Aug. 29), beat then-No. 13 Manchester City (4-3, Sept. 20).
Commentary/recent results: Red Devils won a close one at Wolves in the League Cup on Wednesday, then got a pair of second half goals to book a win at the Brittania Saturday.
Upcoming schedule: Host VfL Wolfsburg in the Champions League Wednesday and Sunderland Saturday. Wolfsburg could be tricky, but probably won't be. Sunderland won't be. A visit to Anfield looms Oct. 25.

4. Chelsea
Last ranking: 3
Record: 8-1-0
Results of note: Beat then-No. 10 Porto in Champions League group stage (1-0, Sept. 15).
Commentary/recent results: After a closer-than-comfortable 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers in the League Cup at midweek, Blues fell apart at Wigan on Saturday, losing 3-1. Ouch. So why do they only drop one spot in the rankings? For one, the teams behind them didn't do particularly well. For another, it was their first loss of the season.
Upcoming schedule: At APOEL Nikosia in the second CL game Wednesday. Liverpool visit the Bridge Sunday.

5. Juventus
Last ranking: 6
Record: 4-0-3
Results of note: Drew then-No. 9 Girondins Bordeaux at home in Champions League group stage (1-1, Sept. 16).
Commentary/recent results: With Inter Milan and Chelsea both losing games last week, the stage was set for Juve to take a significant step up our rankings. Perhaps as high as No. 4? We'll never know, because the bianconeri blew a 1-0 halftime lead to draw Bologna, 1-1, at home. This four days after a 2-2 draw at CFC Genoa. Still, Juve are undefeated. Which is more than I can say of the teams immediately behind them. But some victories are needed if Juve are going to hold on to this perch.
Upcoming schedule: Play at Bayern Wednesday in Day Two of Champions League group play. Then it's off to Palermo, Sunday. Host Fiorentina a week from Saturday. As with Real Madrid, this should give us a better perspective of what this team is capable of.

6. Inter Milan
Last ranking: 5
Record: 4-1-2
Results of note: Beat then-No. 10 AC Milan (4-0, Aug. 29), drew then-No. 2 Barcelona at home in Champions League group stage (0-0, Sept. 17), lost at Sampdoria (1-0, Sept. 26).
Commentary/recent results: Had no problem with Napoli midweek, but the nerazzuri met their match at Sampdoria Saturday, losing 1-0 to the most surprising team of the Serie A season thus far. And, we should add, the best. Just look at the table.
Upcoming schedule: Visit Rubin Kazan tomorrow in the Champions League. They'll need the points after that scoreless draw against Barca in round one. Host Udinese Saturday. Visit the other Genoa team, CFC Genoa, a week from Saturday.

7. Liverpool
Last ranking: 7
Record: 7-2-0
Results of note: None yet.
Commentary/recent results: Okay so what is it with "Big Three" clubs winning their League Cup matches by 1-0? Reds did it at Leeds United Tuesday. They spotted Hull City a goal yesterday before shellacking them with six unanswered.
Upcoming schedule: Things get interesting with a trips to Fiorentina and Stamford Bridge this week. A crucial week for Rafa Benitez' men.

8. Girondins Bordeaux
Last ranking: 8
Record: 6-0-2
Results of note: A scoreless draw at then-No. 18 Olympique Marseille (Aug. 30), drew at then No. 5 Juventus (1-1, Sept. 15).
Commentary/recent results: Les Girondins held on to defeat Stade Rennes yesterday. This may not sound like much (and is not enough to move them up in the rankings, as the teams ahead of them faced two games last week) but Rennes were previously unbeaten. Bordeaux maintain a two point lead atop the League Un standings with the victory. Lyon are second. Marseille have dropped a bit off the pace, five points behind Bordeaux and three behind Lyon.
Upcoming schedule: Host Maccabi Haifa in the second CL matchday the Wednesday. That's a must-win. Also play at St. Etienne Saturday. Then at Auxerre a week later. Then host Bayern Munich on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

9. Sevilla
Last ranking: 10
Record: 5-1-0
Results of note: Beat then No. 21 Unirea Urziceni in Champions League group stage at home (2-0, Sept. 16).
Commentary/recent results: Sevilla won both games last week without giving up a goal. More of the same, in other words (they were last scored upon Sept. 12, five games ago). But now things are about to get real.
Upcoming schedule: A trip to Ibrox is on tap tomorrow. Then Real Madrid pay a visit. We shall soon know if Sevilla are truly a top 10 team.

10. Olympique Lyonnais
Last ranking: 13
Record: 7-0-2
Results of note: Beat then-No. 18 Fiorentina at home in Champions League group stage (1-0, Sept. 16).
Commentary/recent results: Beat Toulouse Saturday, reversing a 1-0 halftime deficit to win 2-1. Lyon remain unbeaten.
Upcoming schedule: Visit Hungarian side Debreceni when the Champions League returns to action tomorrow. Visit Lens (it's pronounced "Lon's") Saturday. A trip to Anfield looms Oct. 20 in the third CL matchday.

11. Manchester City
Last ranking: 11
Record: 4-1-0
Results of note: Beat then-No. 8 Arsenal at home (4-2, Sept. 12), lost to then-No. 4 Manchester United (4-3, Sept. 20).
Commentary/recent results: Idle, so they hold on to their edge over Arsenal.
Upcoming schedule: Host West Ham United later today (I knew I should have taken off for Yom Kippur). Then a tough one at Villa Park Saturday. Liverpool are the next "big four" opponent, Nov. 21. That one's at Anfield. No European action for Citizens, so this is as much as we're going to get as a point of reference.

12. Arsenal
Last ranking: 12
Record: 7-2-0
Results of note: Lost at then-No. 5 Man United (2-1, Aug. 29), lost at then-No. 16 Man City (4-2, Sept. 12)
Commentary/recent results: Gunners won both games last week, at W.B.A. in the League Cup (2-0) and Fulham in the Premiership. The latter game was close: 1-0. We still can't move them ahead of a team they lost to on the field, however.
Upcoming schedule: Undefeated No. 15 Olympiakos visit the Emirates tomorrow. Then Blackburn, then Birmingham City.

13. Porto
Last ranking: 15
Record: 4-2-1
Results of note: Lost at then-No. 3 Chelsea in Champions League group stage (1-0, Sept. 15).
Commentary/recent results: Porto booked their biggest victory of the season to date, defeating Sporting Lisbon 1-0. The Dragoes move up to third place in Liga Sagres with the victory, three behind Benfica and five behind unbeaten and untied Sporting Braga.
Upcoming schedule: Host Atletico Madrid Wednesday and visit Olhanense Sunday.

14. Dynamo Kiev
Last ranking: 14
Record: 9-0-1
Results of note: Won home match against then-No. 22 Rubin Kazan in Champions League group stage (3-1, Sept. 16).
Commentary/recent results: Dynamo had no problem with Zorja Lugansk Friday, winning 2-0 to maintain their two point lead atop the Ukrainian league standings.
Upcoming schedule: Visit Camp Nou. That will be interesting (we hope). Then it's a derby game with Arsenal Kiev on Saturday.

15. Olympiakos
Last ranking: 17
Record: 7-0-1
Results of note: Beat then-No. 17 AZ Alkmaar at home in Champions League group stage (1-0, Sept. 16).
Commentary/recent results: It was a big week for the Greek side and they answered the call, winning both games, midweek at AEK Athens (2-1) and Saturday over Panionios Athens at home (1-0). They're second in the Super League, two weeks behind Panathinaikos.
Upcoming schedule: An even bigger week. It's off to the Emirates for the second Champions League group stage match tomorrow, which should give us an idea of whether they are deserving of this spot. (Alkaar have turned to crap, so that victory doesn't really do much for them). Also visit Levadiakos Saturday.

16. Hamburg SV
Last ranking: 22
Record: 6-2-2
Results of note: Won at then-No. 11 VfL Wolfsburg (4-2, Aug. 23), lost at Rapid Vienna in Europa League group stage (3-0, Sept. 17), beat then-No. 9 Bayern Munich (1-0, Sept. 26).
Commentary/recent results: I'm convinced HSV are completely schizophrenic. They lose to teams like Rapid Vienna and now VfL Osnabrueck (on penalties in a cup tie last Wednesday) then defeat Bayern Munich (1-0 Saturday). Did I mention they're in first place in the Bundesliga? Will the real HSV please show up?
Upcoming schedule: Host Happoel Tel Aviv in Europa League action Thursday. They'll need the three points after that meltdown in Vienna. Visit Hertha Berlin Sunday. Host Bayer Leverkusen, with whom they are currently tied in points atop the Bundesliga standings, on Saturday, Oct. 17.

17. Bayern Munich
Last ranking: 9
Record: 6-2-2
Results of note: Beat then-No. 11 VfL Wolfsburg at home (3-0, Aug. 28), lost at then-No. 22 Hamburg SV (1-0, Sept. 26).
Commentary/recent results: First the good: Bayern had no problems with their minnow opponent (Rot-Weiss Oberhausen, if you must know) in their midweek cup tie, winning 5-0. Now the bad: they then went to Hamburg and lost, 1-0. They drop eight spots on the latter result. A bit harsh, but justified if you look at their overall record. Now they'll have their chance to recover lost ground, however, because...
Upcoming schedule: Host Juventus in the next Champs League game on Wednesday. Also host Cologne Saturday. A clash with Girondins Bordeaux looms Oct. 21.

18. Shakhtar Donetsk
Last ranking: 16
Record: 8-2-1
Results of note: Lost UEFA Supercup to then-No. 2 Barcelona (1-0 in overtime, Aug. 28).
Commentary/recent results: Drew at Metalist Kharkov 1-1 at midweek but recovered with a 4-0 victory over Obolon Kiev yesterday. Metalist Kharkov are certainly decent (made a deep run in the UEFA Cup last season) but I'm going to dock points anyway, partly because I have nowhere to put them.
Upcoming schedule: Host Partizan Belgrade when the Europa League returns to action Thursday, with another Ukrainian league game on tap Saturday.

19. Galatasaray
Last ranking: 18
Record: 7-0-1
Results of note: Beat Besiktas Istanbul at home (3-0, Sept. 12), won at Panathinaikos in Europa League group stage (3-1, Sept. 17).
Commentary/recent results: Galatasaray won their first game of the week, at Kasimpasa Istanbul Monday, their seventh straight to start the season. Then they inexplicably drew Eskisehispor yesterday, 1-1. At home. But wait! Eskisehispor are fourth in the Turkish league, with no losses! So I'm keeping Galatasaray in the Top 25, just a spot lower than they were.
Upcoming schedule: Host Sturm Graz in the next Europa League encounter Thursday and play some other Turkish club Sunday.

20. Benfica Lisbon
Last ranking: 21
Record: 7-0-1
Results of note: None yet.
Commentary/recent results: Benfica had no problems with Leixoes Matosinhos yesterday, walking off with an easy 5-0 win. They sit second in Liga Sagres, behind surprising Sporting Braga, whom you'll hear about in a moment.
Upcoming schedule: Visit AEK Athens when the Europa League returns Thursday. Play at Pacos de Ferreira Sunday. Host Everton in Europa League action a week from Thursday.

21. Sampdoria
Last ranking: None
Record: 5-1-0
Results of note: Beat then-No. 5 Inter Milan at home (1-0, Sept. 26).
Commentary/recent results: Too bad the Samp lost their midweek game at Fiorentina. Had they won, they would have made an even better Top 25 debut. By "debut" I mean all time. They've never been here before. Bienvenuti! So wait, how come they don't move ahead of Inter Milan the way Man City are ahead of Arsenal and HSV ahead of Bayern? We're going to need more evidence. This was the Samp's first big win of the season and they don't play in Europe.
Upcoming schedule: Host Parma Sunday. Visit Lazio a week later. A trip to Juventus looms Oct. 28.

21. Sporting Braga
Last ranking: None
Record: 6-0-0
Results of note: Won at Sporting Lisbon (2-1, Aug. 22), beat then-No. 10 Porto at home (1-0, Sept. 19).
Commentary/recent results: Like the Samp, Braga make their first ever appearance in the top 25 rankings. The catalyst was not what they did last week (a 1-0 victory at Olhanense Saturday) as what they did earlier (see above) or their overall record (ditto). Like Sampdoria, we are not moving them ahead of the foe they vanquished (in this case Porto) due to the discrepancy in schedules.
Upcoming schedule: Host Vitoria Setubal, Sunday. Unfortunately they (like the Samp) are not in any European competition this year.

23. Estudiantes
Last ranking: 24
Record: 6-0-1
Results of note: None yet.
Commentary/recent results: Estudiantes beat Boca Juniors by 2-1 Saturday, taking sole possession of first place in the Apertura table with the victory .
Upcoming schedule: Visit Argentinos Juniors Saturday.

24. Glasgow Rangers
Last ranking: 23
Record: 3-0-4
Results of note: Drew at VfB Stuttgart, 1-1, in the Champions League group stage opener.
Commentary/recent results: Another scoreless draw for Rangers, this one at home to Aberdeen. They're still unbeaten though.
Upcoming schedule: No. 9 Sevilla pay a visit tomorrow. The old firm is on tap Saturday. Lose both and we won't have any reasons to keep Rangers in the top 25. Win, and they could move deep into the Top 20. We'll just have to wait and see...

25. Club America
Last ranking: 25
Record: 5-1-3
Results of note: Beat Deportivo Toluca at home (7-2, Aug. 31).
Commentary/recent results: Beat Atlante 1-0 yesterday. Amazingly, they're only third in their Apertura group, one point behind Monarcas and two behind Monterrey.
Upcoming schedule: Visit Pachuca Saturday.

Dropping Out:
AC Milan (19), Olympique Marseille (20)

Also receiving consideration (in rough order of consideration received):
PSV Eindhoven, Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg.
